How many days can I wear a hydrocolloid dressing and when can I take it off completely?
Facial wounds are usually protected for 7–10 days; stop using the dressing when drainage stops and new skin covers the wound. CNP Dermatology Clinic gives an average of 7–10 days for the face and 10–14 days for the body. Depth and location affect the protection period.
Here, dressing means a hydrocolloid wound dressing used after laser treatment. During the protection period, replace it according to drainage and contamination. Do not leave the same dressing on for an entire week regardless of its condition.
Pieobom Clinic Songdo advises at least one week of protection, followed by another 1–2 weeks for deep areas or wounds that have not filled in. The removal date for these wounds is assessed during a clinical examination rather than copied from a small facial mole. Clinic aftercare guidance
Planning for a week of dressings

일주일 정도 테이프 붙이고 있어야 된다라는 게 부담스럽긴 했는데 English translation: It was burdensome to have to wear tape for about a week
GangnamUnni, updated September 24, 2026. Mole-removal search card 4; combined removal of moles, warts and age spots
If the tape swells white, should I change it immediately?
You don't have to change it right away every time it swells white. Replace it if it leaks, gets dirty, or becomes loose. Hydrocolloid absorbs the fluid and creates a white gel. When mixed with blood, it looks dark red.
Clinics give different replacement intervals, as shown below. Follow the instructions for your product and amount of drainage. Checked October 26, 2026.
| Clinic guidance | Replacement criteria |
|---|---|
| CNP Dermatology Clinic | Once daily during the first 1–2 days if bleeding and drainage are heavy; then every 2 days or until healed. Replace sooner if fluid leaks or the dressing falls off. |
| AB Plastic Surgery Clinic | If the dressing swells substantially with absorbed fluid, replace it 1–2 times daily; if only slightly swollen, once every 1–2 days. |
| Pieobom Clinic Songdo | Replace when the dressing fills with drainage or becomes contaminated. |
| Mior Clinic | Replace once a day before the fluid overflows |
How do I attach it if it leaks or the tape falls off?
Do not reuse tape that has fallen off or is contaminated; wash your hands and replace it with a new one. If the wound is less healed, continue protecting it, but do not rub the wound during the process of removing and applying it.
- When removing
- Support the surrounding skin with your hands and slowly remove from the edge. Do not scrape off the stuck parts and remaining gel all at once.
- Applying a new dressing
- Clean the wound as instructed by your clinic and dry the surrounding skin. Avoid touching the adhesive. Cut the dressing slightly larger than the wound and seal it in place.
- If water got inside
- Replace a dressing that has let water inside and become wet. Do not simply press down a lifted edge and reuse it.
- If it sticks well
- Do not keep lifting the dressing to inspect the wound. If removal strips the skin or causes bleeding, stop repeatedly applying and removing it and contact your clinic.
Changing dressings during aftercare

Can I wash my face on the same day that I removed the mole? When should I start using face wash?
Some clinics allow gentle washing with a well-sealed dressing in place; do not rub or direct water onto the exposed wound. AB Plastic Surgery Clinic permits washing on the procedure day with the dressing attached. Pieobom Clinic Songdo also allows gentle washing and brief showers while minimizing water contact.
If you are specifically told not to do it that day or to start the next day, stick to that time. Even if you apply waterproof tape, you should avoid bathing and swimming in water for long periods of time.
- Use face wash
- Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild face wash from the moment you are allowed to. Do not irritate the wound by rubbing the foam for too long or using brushes, scrubs, or peeling products.
- Remove moisture
- Press gently with a clean towel to remove any moisture and check to see if the tape is lifting. Do not push or rub the tape as if cleaning a wound.
- Swimming and sauna
- Pieobom Clinic Songdo advises waiting about a week for swimming or sauna use. Mior Clinic advises waiting two weeks before brief sauna use. If the wound is still open or draining, ask your clinic before returning.
Can I use ointment under the dressing, or follow ointment-only aftercare?
Do not add unprescribed ointment or cosmetic repair cream under the dressing. CNP Dermatology Clinic says a separate ointment is unnecessary when changing its dressings. If an ointment was prescribed, ask whether to apply it under the dressing or after removing it.
DuoDERM Extra Thin instructions say to remove moisture and greasy substances from the surrounding application area. If the dressing slips over ointment, tell your clinic which product you used and in what order. Manufacturer instructions
There are also treatments that do not use tape. AB Plastic Surgery Clinic provides separate guidance on CO2 tape management and ointment management. With the ointment method, apply it morning and night until it heals and take care not to force the scabs to fall off.

Can I wear makeup on top of the tape? How should I shave?
If you are allowed to wear makeup, keep the tape on and avoid the treatment area, and do not let the razor blade touch the wound. AB Plastic Surgery Clinic's makeup and shaving instructions also include avoiding the treatment area. Do not remove the tape first to cover the wound.
Ask your clinic whether BB cream or sunscreen may go on the dressing surface. Avoid makeup that requires vigorous rubbing to remove. Keep razor blades away from the wound and dressing edges.
Facial dressings are visible, so consider interviews and photo sessions when scheduling treatment. Tell the clinic how many moles and which areas you want treated, and ask where makeup is allowed.

If the tape becomes itchy and red, can I keep putting it on?
If a red, itchy rash follows the shape of the dressing, stop using it and contact your clinic. CNP Dermatology Clinic and Pieobom Clinic Songdo also advise stopping use and seeking assessment for this reaction.
At Bethel Dermatology Clinic's public consultation, there was a question about severe itching and redness at the tape site on the 8th day of mole removal. Dr. Im Sook-hee recommended having the wound examined in person, and the questioner left a follow-up comment saying that the inflammation had decreased after receiving a prescription at another hospital.
Red marks remained and the final recovery results were not disclosed. If you have similar symptoms, you should see a doctor to determine whether it is irritation of the adhesive or infection, and decide on another product or prescription to protect the wound. Public consultation and follow-up comments
- Symptoms to contact immediately
- If redness spreads and pain, swelling, or heat worsens, contact the treatment hospital. Pus or fever are also signs that you should seek medical attention immediately. The American Academy of Dermatology also explains these changes as a sign of suspected infection.
- If you want to add disinfectant at home
- Do not apply hydrogen peroxide repeatedly. Bethel Dermatology Clinic responded to a question about the tape falling off while washing the face and disinfecting it with hydrogen peroxide to stop further use.

If I remove the tape and a red mark remains, should I reapply it?
If new skin covers the wound and only a red mark remains, you do not need to reapply the dressing. AB Plastic Surgery Clinic says redness may remain for 1–6 months after healing. The red mark can take longer to fade than the wound takes to close.
Even during public consultation at Bethel Dermatology Clinic, there was a question about a month after removal, only redness remained without any oozing. In this case, the reply was that there was no need to keep the tape.
- When applying sunscreen
- Once new skin has healed over the wound, apply sunscreen and use a hat for shade. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with SPF 30 or higher on healed wounds.
- When choosing a regenerative cream
- Check whether the product is suitable for the wound, rather than relying on labels such as cica or repair. Do not apply ordinary cosmetics to a draining wound or add several products merely because redness remains.
- If a scab remains
- Do not remove it with your hands or scrub, but continue to use the ointment or dressing recommended by the hospital. Do not assume that a mole has recurred just by looking at the color of the scab.
What management methods should I ask for at the hospital?
Ask which dressing to use, when to start washing, when to apply ointment and when to return. This article concerns hydrocolloid aftercare after laser mole removal. Follow surgical aftercare instructions instead if you have sutures or surgical tape after excision.
- Tape and spares
- Ask which product to use and how full of drainage it should be before replacement. Also ask whether spare dressings are supplied and how much extra to buy.
- Face wash and prescription medication
- Ask separately when to start washing with water and when to use cleanser, and where and when to apply prescribed ointment.
- Deeply removed area
- Ask if there is an area where the removal was deeper than the others and if you can remove the tape there on the same day.
- When a problem occurs
- Ask whom to contact at night or on holidays if swelling or pain develops, and what alternative protection to use if the dressing irritates your skin.

What should I do first in my current situation?
Take the following steps depending on whether the tape has fallen off, the wound has healed, or an itchy rash has appeared.
- If it is well attached and only the inside is white
- Follow the replacement cycle set by the hospital.
- If it falls off while washing your face
- Wash your hands and apply new tape.
- If it's been a week and it's oozing out
- Continue protection and ask for additional care period for deeper areas.
- If an itchy rash follows the dressing outline
- Stop using and seek medical attention.
- If new skin has covered the wound, drainage has stopped and only redness remains
- Take care with moisturizing and UV protection.
How do I manage hydrocolloid dressing and face washing?
Facial dressings are usually discontinued after 7–10 days once drainage stops and new skin covers the wound. If your clinic permits washing on the procedure day, wash gently with the dressing in place.
If your clinic says to wait until the next day, follow that instruction. Deeper wounds need longer protection, so keep replacing the dressing if drainage remains after a week.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the hydrocolloid dressing every 3 days after removing the mole?
If there is a lot of fluid in the first few days, do not wait 3 days and replace it at the interval indicated by the hospital. Leaking or loosened tapes must be replaced even before the scheduled replacement date.
If the hydrocolloid dressing turns white, is it pus?
When hydrocolloid absorbs fluid, a white gel is formed. If pain and heat worsen or redness spreads, you should seek medical attention separately from the white gel.
What happens if you remove the mole and do not apply a hydrocolloid dressing?
If your clinic prescribed ointment-only care, a dressing may not be part of that plan. If it instructed you to protect an open wound with a hydrocolloid dressing, do not leave it exposed on your own; ask about an alternative.
Is it a big deal if the tape falls off while removing a mole and washing your face?
First, wash your hands and replace with new tape. If water gets inside, do not leave the wet item on.
I took off the hydrocolloid dressing, but if it is less healed, should I put it back on?
If the wound is not fully healed and there is no irritation, continue protecting it with a new dressing. If you removed it because of an itchy rash, do not reuse the same product; ask your clinician about alternative dressings or prescribed medication.
If I wear a hydrocolloid dressing, can I not apply sunscreen?
Do not rely on a dressing alone for sun protection. Use a hat and shade, and apply sunscreen once new skin has healed over the wound.
Can I keep a dressing on for a month if the mole-removal site is still red?
Once new skin covers the wound, you need not keep a dressing on until every red mark disappears. The dressing protects the wound; it does not treat residual redness.
